Remember when you first learned your ABC's - you learned a is for apple, b is for ball, etc. Math also uses ABC's, but they are called variables.
1 always means 1 item, 5 always means 5 items
Variables value can change, not like numbers. That is why vary is the first part of their name . |
With Variables - Sometimes the value of the variable is given. Sometimes the value of the variable is not given. For example: The expression could say - simplify (think solve) for b = 9 1) 2b (submitting 9 for b) becomes 2(9) = 18 or The expression could say - simplify (think solve) 1) 7n + 5 - 4n - 8 when like terms are combined becomes 3n - 3 |
Everything you can do with numbers you can do with variables,
Substituting c (a variable) for the cherry c + c = 2c 2 cherries - just like with numbers only If b = 3 bananas 2b would simplify into 2(
